The gap students keep describing
Talk to final year students in Tier 2 and Tier 3 colleges and you hear the same thing. The syllabus is heavy, but it is not what interviewers ask about. AI and machine learning are missing from many curricula. Labs teach concepts but not how real work is done. So students pay, on their own, to fill the gap.
A June 2026 report by Careers360 spoke to engineering students across branches and found typical spending like this:
- Around ₹3,000 to ₹5,000 for a short course in Java, C++, data science or agentic AI
- Around ₹35,000 to ₹40,000 for a six month programme, often taken while switching fields
What they said was still missing after the course
This is the part worth reading twice. One graduate said a six month course covered only the starting point, and building real projects took another four to eight months before he got a job. Another said only five or six students out of a batch of about 120 were placed, even after taking courses.
The lesson is not that courses are useless. It is that a course is the start of the work, not the end of it.
What actually turns learning into an offer
Across recruiters and students who did get hired, the same four things come up.
1. Projects you can explain line by line
Two or three projects you built yourself, with a README that explains the problem, your choices and what you would do differently. One deployed project beats ten tutorial clones. Our GitHub portfolio guide walks through it.
2. Practice in the format recruiters test
Aptitude rounds, a coding round, and a technical interview. Practise under time pressure, not only by reading. You can start with a free 15 minute aptitude test to see where you stand today.
3. AI fluency, used honestly
Employers now expect you to use AI tools well and to understand what the tool produced. See AI fluency in 30 days.
4. A resume that passes the first filter

Where Ucanly fits
We built the Professional Training, Internship & Placement Program around this gap: one month of training, one month of a live project internship, and one month of interview preparation and placement assistance. There is no job guarantee, and we will not pretend otherwise. What you get is structure, mentor feedback, and real project work to show.
If you are not ready to pay for anything, you do not need to. The free test, the free resume analysis and every guide on this blog are free.
