HCLTech has one of the most clearly structured fresher hiring programmes in Indian IT. Its campus hiring page sets out the eligibility, the salary bands, the selection stages and even the English speaking score required. For students, that transparency is valuable: you know exactly what to prepare for. This guide explains HCLTech's programmes for freshers as published on its official site, what each selection stage tests, and how to prepare for each one.
HCLTech updates these details from season to season. Confirm the current figures on the official campus hiring page before you apply.
HCLTech's fresher programmes at a glance
HCLTech's campus hiring page describes several routes:
- AMP for Freshers. A merit based hiring programme for fresh engineering graduates. AMP stands for Ascend, Momentum and Polaris, which are three entry levels.
- Elite Engineers. A pathway for top engineering talent from leading colleges, in areas such as AI, semiconductors, data engineering, physical AI and robotics, and quantum.
- Graduate trainee roles for non engineering graduates in areas such as finance, HR, tech projects and compliance.
- Roles for management graduates, CA, legal and PhD professionals.
HCLTech's freshers portal lists role families including Graduate Engineer Trainee, Graduate Trainee, Post Graduate Trainee and Specialized Hiring, and says you can apply irrespective of your college name.
Eligibility for AMP
HCLTech's published eligibility for AMP is:
- An engineering degree in any branch
- At least 70 percent throughout academics, including Class 10, Class 12 and graduation, for most locations
- At least 65 percent for Lucknow, Nagpur, Vijayawada and Madurai
HCLTech says off campus candidates who meet these criteria are also eligible. For graduate trainee roles, it lists BA, BBA, B.Com, BCA, B.Sc and B.Pharma graduates.
The three AMP levels
HCLTech publishes the following levels for AMP:
| Level | Published CTC |
|---|---|
| Ascend | 4.5 lakh per annum, or 3.75 lakh in Lucknow, Nagpur, Vijayawada and Madurai |
| Momentum | 6 lakh per annum |
| Polaris | 10 lakh per annum |
HCLTech also states that the top 10 percent of Ascend candidates can be upgraded after further evaluation, which may include additional interviews, hackathons or technical tests. For Elite Engineers, it states compensation of up to 18 lakh per annum.
The practical point is that your performance during selection, and in training, can move you to a higher level. It is worth preparing to do well, not just to pass.
The Ascend selection stages
HCLTech describes the Ascend selection as follows:
- Cognitive test covering numerical, verbal and reasoning ability, about 90 minutes.
- Coding or technical test, 60 to 90 minutes.
- Versant test for English speaking and listening. HCLTech states a required score of 46 to 56, which it describes as B1 level.
- Technical and HR interviews for candidates who clear the earlier stages.
Candidates aiming for an upgrade may face additional interviews, hackathons or technical tests.
How to prepare for each stage
Cognitive test
At about 90 minutes, this is a long test. Build stamina as well as accuracy.
- Numerical: percentages, ratios, averages, time and work, time and distance, profit and loss, and data interpretation.
- Verbal: reading comprehension, sentence correction and vocabulary in context.
- Reasoning: series, arrangements, syllogisms, and pattern based questions.
Take at least two full length timed mocks before the real test. Ucanly's free 15 minute aptitude test is a useful first check to find your weakest area before you plan the rest.
Coding or technical test
- Pick one language and practise daily.
- Focus on arrays, strings, hashing, sorting, searching, recursion and basic data structures.
- Revise OOPs, DBMS and SQL, operating systems and networking fundamentals.
Versant English test
This is where many technically strong students lose out. A spoken English test rewards clarity and steady pace more than advanced vocabulary.
- Read a paragraph aloud for five minutes every day, and record yourself.
- Practise repeating sentences you hear, word for word. Listening accuracy matters.
- Answer simple questions aloud in full sentences for one minute, without long pauses.
- Speak at a steady, moderate pace. Rushing reduces clarity.
Start at least three weeks before your test. Spoken fluency improves gradually.
Technical and HR interviews
Prepare a two minute explanation of every project on your resume, and be ready to write and explain a short program. For HR, prepare your introduction, your reasons for choosing HCLTech, and honest answers on relocation and shifts. Our guide to campus placement preparation covers the interview stage in more detail.
Training before and after joining
HCLTech describes two training routes. Students at its Primus partner campuses follow an industry aligned curriculum integrated into their college programme. Non Primus and off campus hires must complete mandatory pre joining training and pass a post training assessment, and HCLTech says strong performance there may allow an upgrade from Ascend.
For graduate trainees, HCLTech mentions university partnerships that part fund master's study, such as an MBA, M.Tech or MCA, alongside the job.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Ignoring the location threshold. The marks requirement differs by location. Check which applies to your preferred city.
- Leaving English practice to the end. The Versant test needs weeks of daily speaking practice, not a night of revision.
- Preparing only to pass. Because levels and upgrades depend on performance, strong scores can change your starting role and pay.
- Missing the verification email. HCLTech's portal advises checking spam for the email that contains your login details.
How to apply, and how to stay safe
HCLTech's campus hiring page links to its freshers portal for applications. The portal asks you to register, verify your email, and check your spam folder for the verification email with your login details.
HCLTech is clear about fees and communication:
- It states that it does not charge fees for the campus recruitment process, hiring or background verification, and never asks for a recruitment fee, hiring fee, security deposit, or software or equipment charges.
- It says it sends emails only from @hcltech.com addresses.
- It asks candidates to report suspected fake offer letters to VerifyHCLOffer@hcl.com.

What to do this week
Check the HCLTech campus hiring page for current eligibility, confirm your marks meet the threshold for your preferred location, and start daily spoken English practice today. Then build a routine that covers the cognitive test, coding and the Versant test together, so no stage is left to the last week.
