Every year, lakhs of final year students across India sit for the TCS National Qualifier Test. For many, it is the first serious corporate assessment they face. The test is long, the cut offs are not published, and the advice online is often outdated or copied from older patterns. This guide sets out what TCS itself has published for its 2026 hiring drive, explains how the process moves from registration to offer, and gives a practical preparation plan you can follow alongside college.

Treat every detail here as a starting point. TCS updates its eligibility and pattern from drive to drive, so always read the current notice on the official TCS careers site before you register.

What the TCS NQT is, and why there are two versions

There are two related things that students often mix up.

TCS All India NQT Hiring is TCS's own fresher recruitment drive. You register on the TCS NextStep portal, take an integrated test, and if shortlisted, attend interviews for a role at TCS.

TCS iON NQT is a separate, general ability test run by TCS iON. According to TCS iON, it is open to pre final and final year students of any stream, students passing between 2022 and 2028, and working professionals with up to two years of experience. Your scorecard is valid for two years and can be used to apply to the many companies that accept the score. TCS iON states that the test is conducted only in English with no negative marking, and that you can take it again to improve your score.

If your goal is a job at TCS itself, follow the All India NQT Hiring drive. If you want a score you can use across several employers, the TCS iON NQT is the relevant one.

Eligibility for the 2026 TCS NQT hiring drive

For the drive covering the 2024, 2025 and 2026 batches, TCS published the following criteria:

  • Degrees: B.E., B.Tech, M.E., M.Tech, MCA, or M.Sc or M.S. in any specialisation, from AICTE or UGC recognised institutions.
  • Marks: at least 60 percent, or equivalent CGPA, in Class 10, Class 12, diploma where applicable, graduation and post graduation where applicable.
  • First class: for engineering degrees, the offer is valid only if your certificate shows you cleared in first class within the stipulated duration.
  • Backlogs: no pending backlogs when you appear for the selection process.
  • Gaps: any gap must be declared, and the total academic gap must not exceed 24 months up to your highest qualification.
  • Mode: full time courses only. Part time and correspondence courses are not considered.
  • Experience and age: up to two years of work experience, and age between 18 and 28.

Check these against your own marksheets before you register. A mismatch discovered at document verification ends the process, however well you did in the test.

The 2026 test pattern, section by section

TCS described the 2026 test as an integrated, in centre test of 190 minutes at TCS iON centres, split into two parts.

PartSectionTime
Part A: FoundationNumerical Ability25 minutes
Part A: FoundationVerbal Ability25 minutes
Part A: FoundationReasoning Ability25 minutes
Part B: AdvancedAdvanced Quantitative and Reasoning25 minutes
Part B: AdvancedAdvanced Coding90 minutes

TCS states that the Advanced section is mandatory if you want to be considered for Prime or Digital offers, and that your test result decides whether you are called for a Prime, Digital or Ninja interview.

TCS iON describes the Foundation areas in more detail. Verbal Ability covers grammar, usage and reading comprehension. Reasoning Ability covers word and number patterns, problem solving, figural and factual analysis, decision making, propositional reasoning and visual spatial reasoning. Numerical Ability covers the number system, arithmetic, elementary statistics and data interpretation.

Prime, Digital and Ninja: what the categories mean

TCS hires freshers into different categories with different compensation. For the 2026 drive, TCS said the focus was on Prime and Digital, with Ninja offers depending on performance during the process.

TCS published indicative CTC figures on its drive page. For undergraduates with up to one year of experience, it listed about 9.09 to 9.30 lakh per annum for Prime and about 7.09 to 7.30 lakh for Digital, with a minimum of 3.4 lakh for Ninja. Postgraduate figures were higher. TCS also noted that actual compensation depends on relevant experience and job location. These figures belong to that specific drive, so confirm the current numbers on the official page before relying on them.

The practical takeaway is simple. The coding section is where Prime and Digital are decided. If you only prepare for aptitude, you are preparing for the lowest category.

How the selection process moves after the test

TCS describes the process in three broad stages.

  1. Online test. The integrated test described above, followed by shortlisting.
  2. Interview. Shortlisted candidates are interviewed, mainly on the skill they selected while registering, along with the usual interview process. TCS does not publish a fixed number of rounds, but most students should expect technical questions, a discussion of their projects, and questions on attitude and fit.
  3. Documents and joining. Original academic documents are required at the interview and at joining. Freshers then go through TCS's Initial Learning Program before being assigned to projects.

To apply, TCS asks candidates to log in to the NextStep portal, register under the IT category rather than BPS, click "Apply For Drive", choose a skill for evaluation, select the in centre test mode with three preferred centres, and choose three preferred job cities. You then confirm under "Track Your Application" that your status reads "Applied for Drive". The detailed application form is completed after results are declared.

A six week preparation plan

Six weeks of steady work, about 90 minutes a day, is enough to make a real difference for most students.

Weeks 1 and 2: Foundation sections

  • Revise percentages, ratios, time and work, time and distance, averages, and basic statistics. Solve 20 timed questions a day.
  • For reasoning, practise series, coding and decoding, seating arrangements, syllogisms and data sufficiency.
  • For verbal, read one long article a day and summarise it in five lines. Grammar improves fastest when you read carefully, not when you memorise rules.

Weeks 3 and 4: Coding

  • Pick one language, such as C++, Java or Python, and stay with it.
  • Solve two problems a day on arrays, strings, sorting, searching, hashing and basic recursion.
  • Practise reading input and printing output exactly in the expected format. Many students lose marks on correct logic with incorrect formatting.

Week 5: Full timed mocks

  • Take at least three full length mocks under real time limits. The Advanced Coding section is 90 minutes, so build the stamina to stay focused that long.
  • After every mock, list the three question types that cost you the most time.

Week 6: Interview readiness

  • Prepare a two minute explanation of each project: the problem, your role, the stack, and one thing you would change.
  • Revise core subjects for your skill choice: OOPs, DBMS and basic SQL, and operating system fundamentals.
  • Practise the opening question. Our guide on answering "Tell me about yourself" walks through a structure that works.

If you want a quick baseline before you start, you can take a free 15 minute aptitude test and see your score and answers immediately. It will show you which of the three Foundation areas needs the most work.

Common mistakes that cost students the offer

  • Ignoring the coding section. It decides your category.
  • Choosing a skill you cannot defend. The interview focuses on the skill you selected while registering. Choose the one you have actually used in a project.
  • Errors in the application. Marks, gap years and dates must match your documents exactly.
  • Paying anyone. TCS states on its recruitment fraud alert page that it does not ask for any payment or security deposit at any stage of recruitment. Our guide to spotting fake job offers lists the warning signs.

What to do this week

Read the current notice on the TCS careers site, check your marksheets against the eligibility list, and pick your coding language. Then take one timed aptitude test to find your weakest area, and give the first two weeks of your plan to fixing it.
